Mountain Bike Cycling – Tips and Advice For Beginners
Mountain bike cycling is the most accessible type of cycling to many people, and by far the most exciting. It is superb for fitness and it takes you away from traffic and all the usual daily stresses of life.
Mountain bike cycling is done off-road, usually around country parks that allow bikes, or local bridleways, as well as specific cycle trails and difficult technical trails. If you are new to mountain biking be sure to practice enough to improve before trying any technical trails.
Usually mountain bike cyclists improve their skills through practice and often by watching more experienced cyclists. It’s also a help to read books and watch DVDs on the subject, but the best way is just practice and more practice.
Before you can start you need a mountain bike, so shoosing which bike to buy is your first task. There are many different mountain bikes available to buy, ranging significantly in price and design. If you are just starting out it’s a good plan to get a cheaper bike until you get some experience and can decide what you like the best.
When you’ve got your mountain bike you’ll have to get some suitable clothing to wear. Mountain bikers tend to go for a more casual look than road cyclists, for example they often wear baggy shorts. Specialist mountain biking shorts look like regular shorts but with a padded lining for extra comfort.
Above everything, there are several bits of important kit to wear at all times, whatever the weather, and these are a helmet, glasses, and gloves. These safety items are to help protect you against flying mud and stones, low hanging branches, troublesome bushes, and falling off your bike.
You will probably have some minor falls as that is part and parcel of mountain biking, but if you are wearing the correct protective clothing you will only get minor cuts and bruises.
When you’ve got all the right kit you need to choose where to ride. There are guides to your local area available, either from bookshops, bike shops or on the internet. Visitor information centres usually have lots of useful information, including where to ride locally and graded trails. There are even specialist mountain bike centres run by the Forestry Commission, with marked trails that are graded for different abilities.
When you have all the appropriate kit you’re ready to go mountain bike cycling, although if you’re also armed with a little mountain bike maintenance knowledge you can stay safe and push your limits further. The most important thing is to really nejoy the buzz you get.
