Brake Shifter
how are brake shifters used?? i managed to shift rear derailer all way down to smallest size sprocket?
but i cant figure out how to shift back up? yes i’m a dinosaur, but can anybody help, these are ultegra finger shifters underneath front and back brake levers, 2009 edition, much thanks

Take a look at the brakes. If you push the brake lever (just a little) to the inside, see it rotates at a pivot point at the top. Now you should do that, harder, ONLY when pedaling. One push, one gear changes. The right brake movement changes the rear cogs. The left one changes the chain ring (where the peddles are).
In normal riding you should always be in the larger chain ring (where the peddles are), and vary the cogs in back to meet the changes in road conditions. Now, the big secret….. while riding, find what peddle pressure feels good. You don’t have to strain to hard, nor spin too fast. That my friend is your initial peddle pressure to feel at all times. Adjust the gears in back (right brake) to maintain that pressure.
Lastly, do not ever ‘mash’ the peddles, you should never feel that you have to ‘muscle’ the peddles around…. you spin the peddles as quickly as you can sustain in a circles (say at 70+ rpm to start) while you keep the ideal peddle pressure that you just discovered in paragraph 2. That my friend is called ‘spinning’; and, that -is your best friend…… Initially, you can change to the smaller cog (using the left brake) only on hills or when you absolutely must to keep up both the spinning speed and ideal peddle pressure.
You will soon understand the phrase “Spin faster not harder, numb nuts”……. Ah, but that is another riding secret, that you must learn on your own.
