Why wont my mini 14 cycle steel cased ammo? Neither Brown Bear or Wolf both in 55gr JHP will not cycle.?
Brand New Mini 14 tactical version. Cycles brass with no issues about 250 rounds thru it already. Ive tried both Brown Bear and Wolf 55gr JHP and it will not cycle. Im a little disappointed because i bought the mini based on all reviews saying they have no problems shooting steel. My bushmaster eats both brands of steel and from what Ive heard all issues with ar extractions is the steel ammo yet mine seems to handle it fine until it gets real dirty. But why wont my mini. Brown bear wasnt working good and i thought maybe it was because of the laquer coating so i bought some wolf which is polymer coated and i still have the same issues. I enjoy shooting a lot and brass cost twice as much as steel. any ideas? thanks guys.
I own several mini`s both 30 & 14 and have fired all the bears and the wolf ammo with no problems, but none of my rifles are the heavy 16″ barrel that comes on the tactical model. You may be just a little small on the port diameter an therefore not enough gas pressure from the cheaper ammo to blow the bolt back.
You may check with Ruger and see if there`s a way to increase the size in the gas port bushing without interfering with any warranty.
Rugers are very good rifles and I hope you solve your problem and I`m sure that it`s not major.
