Red Road Bike
So i have this vilano red road bike and was wondering if i could turn it into a fixie..?
I got this road bike with gears and everything.i wanted to know what to do to turn it into a fix gear.n i also want to get deep v rims and was wondering if that is posibble.And if i take out the gears would i be able to sell it n how much should i charge thank you
Fix gear bikes become obsolete in about 1904. The freewheel was a revolutionary invention that gave the bikes so much freedom. However bikes with flip flop were still common in the 1960′s.
Since the 1950′s when multiple gears and derailleurs become efficient for the general public to use, they have become common not only for racing but for street bikes and is the main thing that made mountain bikes possible.
Bike folks for about two or three generations have been very proud of their 10 speeds, and learned to keep them working properly spending some time in adjusting derailleurs and brakes and keeping the bikes oiled and in good order. A bike was a precious thing. Now bikes have become for many people a through away item. You buy one at W****** in spring and by the fall, when most components are not working goes either to the dumpster or becomes a fixie.
In some parts of the world, a fix-gear person is use to describe an obstinate, unyielding, conservative, not open to the new ideas, stuck in the old ways person. People have lost the capacity, and knowledge to maintain their bikes. Loosing that ability to understand the workings of the machine, use tools and fix things makes people less free and more dependent (human less-than-abilis?).
Now that we have up to 30 speeds bikes with STI that work smooth as silk that only require the use of an adjusting barrel now and then. Yet, some people find it fashionable to use a single speed fixie with no breaks, and paint in the chain. I wonder why they keep the pedals when the only thing you need is the stem of the pedal, and if you are looking for more simplicity and less weight to zoom through traffic, you could also eliminate the saddle. Lets just go basic, anyway you don’t use the saddle to do skips.
So, yes you could turn it into a fixie. If you take off the gears, you will not get any money for them. Keep them so you would be able to put them back when you get tired of your fixie. Deep V rims are great when you reach some speed, like 30 mph, which you will never do. Keep the brakes.
